The short answer: the box below shows the best deal we’re tracking right now (and says so when nothing is really discounted), and every Kindle and Kobo gets a verdict further down. Our advice for October: unless a model shows Good deal, wait for Black Friday. During Prime Day 2026, Amazon cut the 2024 Kindle to $84.99 and the 2024 Paperwhite to $124.99.
None of these is 5% or more below its 30-day high right now, so this is our pick at its current price.
Every price on this page is pulled live from Amazon, and we track each one ourselves. The verdicts compare today’s price with our own 30-day low and, where we have one, the Prime Day 2026 price, so you can tell a real discount from the usual price.
Today’s Kindle and Kobo prices
Not sure which one to get? Our guide to the best e-readers of 2026 compares them all.
Is today’s price a good deal?
The best benchmark is what Amazon charged during its last big sale. During Prime Day 2026 (June 23 to 26), Amazon listed the 2024 Kindle, Paperwhite and Colorsoft Signature Edition at the prices in the table. The verdict says Good deal when today’s price reaches our target (or a real 30-day low), Fair price when it’s close, and Wait when it’s well above.

Prime Day prices are for the 2024 models, which were the current Kindles in June, and come from Amazon’s own Prime Day 2026 deals page. The Kobos have no Prime Day price, so their verdict is based on our own price tracking. The 2026 Paperwhite is brand new, so it shows Tracking started until we have a week of prices.
How to spot a fake Kindle deal
- Check the model year. Amazon sells 2024 and 2026 models side by side, and listing titles say “(newest model)” or “(2024 model)”. A big discount is often on the older one.
- Ads or no ads. The same Kindle costs more without lockscreen ads. The 2026 Kindle is $149.99 with ads and $169.99 without, so compare like with like.
- Bundles inflate the discount. Bundles with a cover or bag show big percentages off. During Prime Day 2026, Amazon listed a Colorsoft sling bag bundle at 48% off, while the Colorsoft alone was 36% off. Only buy a bundle if you want the extras.
- Like-New vs Renewed. Amazon’s own Like-New Kindles carry the same warranty as new. Third-party “renewed” listings may not, so check who the seller is.
- Watch the 30-day tag. On this page, a “Lowest price in 30 days” tag means the price really is the lowest we’ve tracked recently.
Black Friday 2026: what to expect
Amazon hasn’t announced its 2026 Black Friday dates yet. Last year, its Black Friday Week and Cyber Monday events ran from November 20 to December 1, and Amazon named the Kindle Paperwhite and the Kindle Scribe among the deals, along with three months of Kindle Unlimited for $0.99.
Three things to keep in mind this year:
- The 2024 models are the ones to watch. In our price tracker, the 2024 Paperwhite briefly dropped from $199.99 to $149.99 on October 6 before going back up, and older stock tends to get the deepest cuts once a new model is out.
- The 2026 Paperwhite and Colorsoft are brand new. They ship on October 28, so we don’t know yet whether Amazon will discount them for Black Friday.
- Prime Day is the benchmark. If a Black Friday price isn’t at or near the Prime Day 2026 prices above, it isn’t a standout deal.
Here’s how the 2024 Paperwhite’s price has moved over the last 30 days in our tracker:
From our own price tracker, which started watching this product on Sep 28. Not Amazon data.
| Date | Price |
|---|---|
| Sep 28 | $199.99 |
| Oct 6 | $149.99 |
| Oct 8 | $199.99 |
| Today | $199.99 |
We’ll update this page when Amazon announces its dates and again when the sale starts.
Refurbished and “Like-New” Kindles
Amazon now sells its certified refurbished Kindles as “Like-New”. According to Amazon’s listings, each one is tested, cleaned and certified to look and work like new, and comes with the same limited warranty as a new Kindle. They may ship in a plain Amazon box.
When they’re worth it: if the Like-New price is clearly below the current sale price of the new model. During big sales, a new Kindle can cost about the same as a Like-New one, so compare both before you buy.
Other ways to save on a Kindle
- Trade in your old device. Amazon’s current trade-in promotion gives you a 20% credit toward a new Kindle, Paperwhite, Colorsoft, Scribe or Kids model when you trade in an eligible device, for trade-ins submitted until January 1, 2027. Amazon limits the credit to one per account per device category per quarter.
- Kindle Unlimited trials. Amazon regularly offers discounted Kindle Unlimited trials. See our Kindle Unlimited deal page for the current offer.
- Audible. If you listen as well as read, check our Audible Premium Plus deal page.
- Buying for a child? The Kids bundles include a cover, Amazon Kids+ and a 2-year guarantee. See our Kindle Kids deals page.
Kobo deals
Kobo e-readers are sold on Amazon, and Kobo also sells certified refurbished e-readers on its own US store. Kobo prices on Amazon move less than Kindle prices, so a discount of even $20 on the Libra Colour or Clara BW is worth taking. The Libra Colour is $257.99 and the Clara BW is $159.99 today.
