We independently review all recommendations. Purchases made through our links may earn us an affiliate commission. Here’s how it works.

The Kindle vs Kobo choice comes down to where your books come from more than to the hardware: Kindle is built around Amazon’s store, and Kobo around library borrowing and files from anywhere.

Buying books

Your books: the difference that matters most

Each brand sells ebooks through its own store, and those books stay tied to that brand’s devices and apps. Kindle books use Amazon’s formats and copy protection, and Kobo’s list of supported formats doesn’t include them, so a book bought from Amazon won’t open on a Kobo. It works the other way too: a Kindle can’t read books bought from Kobo.

That makes the choice harder to undo once you own a lot of books. Amazon also ended its “Download & Transfer via USB” option on February 26, 2025, according to the notice MobileRead members quoted, so Kindle books now reach your devices over Wi-Fi only. If you leave Kindle for Kobo, you keep reading your Amazon books in the free Kindle app on a phone or tablet.

Amazon’s store is the bigger of the two, and Kindle Exclusives are only sold there. If a few authors you follow publish only on Amazon, that settles it in Kindle’s favor.

Library borrowing

Library books: easier on Kobo, U.S.-only on Kindle

This is where Kobo pulls ahead. Add your library card in the account settings once, and you can browse and borrow library ebooks from the e-reader’s Discover section, through OverDrive’s Libby service. You don’t need a phone or a computer. The one gap: Kobo says audiobooks borrowed through Libby can’t be played on its e-readers.

Kindles read library books only from U.S. libraries. You borrow the book in the Libby app or website, tap Read With, choose Kindle and finish on Amazon’s site, which sends the book to your Kindle.

Outside the U.S.? OverDrive lists the Kindle format as available for U.S. libraries only, so a Kobo is the practical choice for library borrowing.

Your own files

Your own files: EPUB, PDF and comics

Kobo e-readers open EPUB, PDF and MOBI books, CBZ and CBR comics, plain text and images directly, according to Kobo’s help center. You can copy files over USB, or link a Dropbox account and drop files into a Rakuten Kobo folder that syncs over Wi-Fi. Google Drive syncing works on some models, including the Libra Colour and Elipsa 2E. Kobo also reads EPUBs protected with Adobe’s copy protection, such as ebooks from other stores, once you add them through Adobe Digital Editions.

Kindles take your own files through Send to Kindle. Amazon’s help pages list EPUB, PDF, Word, text and image files, up to 200 MB each through the web uploader. That covers most DRM-free books, but comic files in CBZ or CBR format aren’t on Amazon’s list.

Subscriptions

Kindle+ vs Kobo Plus

Kindle+, the new name for Kindle Unlimited since October 2026, costs $11.99 a month in the US. Amazon says it covers millions of ebooks and thousands of audiobooks, plus comics, manga and magazines, with up to 20 titles borrowed at a time. Some ebooks come with their audiobook at no extra cost. Our Kindle Unlimited (Kindle+) deal page tracks discounted trials.

Kobo Plus comes in three US plans on Kobo’s store: Read or Listen at $7.99 a month each, or both for $9.99, with a free trial. Prices differ by country, and Kobo Plus is only offered in some countries.

Kobo Plus costs less in the US, but neither catalog includes every book. Browse each one for the authors you actually read before paying; a subscription only saves money if your books are in it.

Listening

Audiobooks: Audible vs Kobo

Kindles play Audible audiobooks through Bluetooth headphones or speakers. If you own a Kindle book and its matching Audible audiobook, you can switch between reading and listening from the same spot, according to Amazon’s and Audible’s help pages.

Kobo’s current Clara BW, Clara Colour, Libra Colour and Elipsa 2E, plus several older models, play audiobooks bought from Kobo, over Bluetooth only. Libby audiobooks don’t play on them. If your audiobooks live on Audible, a Kindle keeps your reading and listening on one device.

The models, matched up

Prices below are today’s on Amazon US and update automatically.

Kindle vs Kobo Clara BW (6-inch)

The basic Kindle and the Clara BW are both 6-inch readers with 16GB of storage. The Clara BW adds the two things the Kindle lacks: an adjustable warm light, which Kobo calls ComfortLight PRO, and IPX8 waterproofing. The Kindle answers with a thinner 2026 design, books that open 30% faster than on the previous Kindle according to Amazon, and a battery you can replace.

Choosing between the Paperwhite and the cheaper Clara BW instead? Both have a warm light and IPX8 waterproofing, so it comes down to the 7-inch vs 6-inch screen and which store you use.

Kindle Colorsoft vs Kobo’s color readers

The Kindle Colorsoft ($289.99) is a 7-inch color reader with a warm light, IPX8 waterproofing and up to 8 weeks of battery, sold without lockscreen ads. Kobo has two color models: the 6-inch Clara Colour ($179.99) and the 7-inch Libra Colour. For comics and manga, see our best e-readers for manga and comics.

Kindle Scribe vs Kobo Elipsa 2E (note-taking)

Both are for writing as much as reading. The Kindle Scribe ($499.99) has an 11-inch screen and comes with a pen. The Kobo Elipsa 2E ($396.95) has a 10.3-inch screen, 32GB of storage and the Kobo Stylus 2 in the box, and lets you write directly on ebooks and PDFs. Our guide to the best e-readers for students covers note-taking in more depth.

Day to day

Everyday reading: software and design

  • Page turns. No 2026 Kindle has page-turn buttons. Amazon sells the Kindle Click remote separately, and the Colorsoft Signature Edition adds double-tap page turns. On Kobo, the Libra Colour has physical buttons.
  • Organizing your library. In MobileRead threads from Kindle owners who moved to Kobo, several posters prefer how Kobo handles collections and series. Others, on older models, found page turns and menus slower than on their Kindle.
  • Saved articles. Kobo e-readers now use Instapaper for saved web articles, after Pocket shut down on July 8, 2025.
  • Recaps. The 2026 Kindles add Story So Far, a spoiler-free recap of the book up to where you stopped.
  • Home screen. One MobileRead member who left a Paperwhite for a Kobo Clara Colour in late 2024 did it because the Kindle kept showing book suggestions on the home screen.

Switching

Switching from Kindle to Kobo

  • Your Kindle books stay with Amazon. Keep reading them in the free Kindle app on your phone or tablet.
  • DRM-free books move easily. Copy EPUB files over USB, or manage them with Calibre, which owners on MobileRead use to sort and send books to their Kobo.
  • Library books get easier. Add your library card on the Kobo and borrow straight from the device.
  • Subscriptions don’t transfer. Cancel Kindle+ when you’re done with it, and try Kobo Plus during its free trial.
